"IIT-SINE Technical Seminar in honor and memory of Professor Sukant Tripathy"
Date: Saturday, June 16, 2001
Time: 9:00 A.M. - 12:00 Noon
Location: Alumni Library,UMASS Lowell (refer to directions below)
Sukant Tripathy: Dr. Sukant Tripathy, University Professor of Chemistry and Director of the Center for Advanced Materials, drowned while on a break from the American Chemical Society International Meeting he was attending in Hawaii in December 2000.
Sukant was born in Dihar, India, in 1952. Since 1985, he had been a professor in the chemistry department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. He also served as provost of the University from 1994 to 1996. He was founder and director of the Center for Advanced Materials and recently helped establish the University's new Institute for NanoScience Engineering and Technology.
His expertise was in the broad area of polymer research involving molecular design; structure, property, use relationships; electronic and optical phenomena in polymeric solids; and functional polymers. He had an extensive research background in electroactive polymers, organic nonlinear optics and theoretical modeling, and simulations of macromolecular systems leading to the establishment of structure-property relationships, and design of advanced polymeric systems and their growth under unusual circumstances. He published more than 200 refereed research papers and held more than two dozen patents.
Sukant held undergraduate and master's degrees in physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and a Ph.D. in macromolecular sciences from Case Western Reserve University. Before joining the UMass Lowell faculty, he was a research manager at GTE Laboratories.
The Program:
In honor of this great IITian, who was a great contributor to science and education in our community, IIT SINE is organizing a technical seminar series featuring local IITians who knew Sukant and his work.
